According to tradition and older sources, an endowment of Despot Stefan Lazarević — the founder and the exact year of construction are not documented, and the dating (around 1402–1415) is derived from the despot's portrait in the church. The main church is dedicated to Saint Stephen, with frescoes by several masters. It has been under state protection since 1951, and since 1979 it has been listed as an immovable cultural property of great importance. Since 1958 it has been a convent, known for prayers for childbirth.
